Indlela —
The Path
A culturally rooted residential design exploring identity, movement, and family connection.
Indlela, meaning “The Path” in Zulu, is a residential project designed around the journey of a multigenerational family. Through continuous circulation, cultural patterns, warm materials, and spatial storytelling, the home creates a balance between shared family connection and individual identity.
Design Concept
The concept of “Indlela — The Path” is expressed through continuous circulation and interconnected spatial sequences. Inspired by the geometric patterns of Zulu beadwork, movement becomes a guiding element that shapes how users navigate the home. The design uses pattern, direction, and flow to create a sense of connection between spaces, reflecting cultural identity and the idea of a shared journey.
Design Narrative
The home is conceived as a spatial journey shaped by the lives of a multigenerational Zulu family. Each space reflects a balance between togetherness and individuality, allowing family members to connect while maintaining their own identity. Cultural patterns, color, and materiality are integrated throughout the home, transforming everyday living into a narrative of heritage, movement, and belonging.
Key Design Strategies
CIRCULATION AS PATH
Movement becomes a defining element, guiding users through interconnected spaces and reinforcing the concept of “The Path.”
CULTURAL EXPRESSION
Zulu patterns, colors, and textures are integrated into walls, furniture, and surfaces to reflect identity and heritage.
Multigenerational Zoning
Spaces are designed to balance shared family interaction with individual privacy for each member.
Visual Wayfinding
Geometric patterns and color variations help users navigate the home intuitively.
Material Language
Natural wood, textured finishes, and vibrant fabrics create warmth, depth, and authenticity.
Spatial Organization
The spatial layout is organized around continuous circulation, reinforcing the concept of “The Path.” Shared living spaces are placed on the ground floor to encourage interaction and connection, while upper levels provide more private zones for individual retreat. The flow between spaces is uninterrupted, allowing movement to guide the user experience while maintaining a strong sense of unity throughout the home.
